PROTECT Participates in the 35th Annual NIEHS SRP Meeting
More than 30 PROTECT researchers, staff, and trainees attended the 35th Anniversary Annual Superfund Research Program Meeting held from December 14th to 16th. The 2022 meeting was held in Raleigh, North Carolina, and co-hosted by the SRP programs at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and North Carolina State.
Each year, SRP gathers individuals from SRP centers across the country to discuss research opportunities and data sharing. These discussions help advance the goals of the SRP program and show the SRP community how they can work together to address Superfund sites and environmental health issues.
PROTECT researchers and trainees presented throughout the event. Training core researcher and former trainee Dr. Nancy Cardona presented her research that analyzes the connection between personal care products and maternal health. Human Subjects Core (HSSC) postdoc Skarlet Velasquez presented on her KC Donnelly externship research, titled “Associations of Phthalate Mixtures and Birth Outcomes Among Women using Exposomic Sensors in New Hampshire.” Project 3 trainee Luisa Feliciano also presented her KC Donnelly externship research, titled “Post-Hurricane Damage Assessment Near Superfund Sites Using a GeoAI Framework.”
PROTECT had 18 posters featured during the meeting, with the following researchers and trainees presenting: Annella Benjamin (Project 2), Sofia Contreras (HSSC/CEC), Jarrod Eaton (Project 1), Fahad Ehsan (Project 4), Yinmei Feng (Project 3), Zlatan Feric (DMAC), Chrystal Galán Rivera (CEC), Nobel Hernández-Otero (HSSC/CEC), Sammy Jaber (Project 2), Irene Lafarga-Previdi (HSSC), Shannon (Seonyong) Park (Project 1), Elienisse Rodriguez-Medina (Project 3), Stephanie Sarrouf (Project 4), Ram Siwakoti (Project 1), Savannah Sturla (Project 1), Amir Taqieddin (Project 4), and Skarlet Velasquez (HSSC). Shannon Park’s poster, “Gestational exposure to phthalates and phthalate replacements in relation to neurodevelopmental delays in early childhood,” won the third-place prize during the second poster session.
