On Friday, February 28th PROTECT Co-Director Akram Alshawabkeh was among SRP Leaders who spoke with Congressional Staff on the strengths and impactful research coming out of the NIEHS Superfund Research Program. The group led by Akram also included SRP leaders Bevin Engelward (MIT), Lindell Ormsbee (University of Kentucky), and Margaret Reams (Louisiana State University) who met with Professional Staff Members Dr. Kusai Merchant, Kristin Clarkson, Kathryn Solmon, Melissa Zimmerman, and Lucas Agnew.
During the meeting SRP leaders emphasized the solution-oriented approach to research and offered a general overview of the Superfund program, highlighting the strengths and value of Superfund Centers to the public and to many communities disproportionately effected by environmental contamination. They also conveyed how unique it is to have a program fund such an interdisciplinary group of researchers with combined biomedical and environmental sciences expertise.
Throughout the dialogue, the team described examples of work from numerous SRP Centers across the U.S. To learn more about this visit, check out the article written by MIT’s Bevin Engelward.
