On March 14th, 2017, The Hill, an American political journalism newspaper and website published in Washington, D.C., posted the Op-ed, Reagan’s Superfund research must get back to Bush II funding levels written by Akram Alshawabkeh, PROTECT Co-Director, along with Rebecca Fry and Elizabeth Glass Geltman. The piece argues for continued and increased support by Congress for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Superfund Research Program (SRP) and details the bipartisan, successful history of the program, despite funding that has decreased or remained stagnant since 2006. In the words of the authors, continued and increased funding of the program is “an important investment in education, public health, and job creation.”

Each author of the piece brings an impressive history of leading NIEHS SRP-funded Centers. Akram Alshawabkeh co-directs the PROTECT SRP Center, Rebecca Fry directs the UNC Superfund Research Center, and Elizabeth Glass Geltman directs the Atlantic Emerging Technologies and Industrial Hygiene Training Center.
